Painting, Sculpture
The installation Silence at the Heart, conceived especially for Nuit blanche at the Galerie Saint-Séverin, pairs a sculpture—laid flat or reclined— Déposition at the Heart—which marks a first in the artist’s career—with a tar painting enhanced with charcoal, introducing a natural element. The title alludes to Saint-Séverin, the hermit of silence who lived along the Seine, whose legend says he is buried at the site of the eponymous church in the heart of Paris. All summer, a monumental outdoor exhibition, Un Temps infini, is on view at the Domaine national de Saint-Cloud and extends this Paris installation, since Saint-Cloud was a disciple of Saint-Séverin.
The display will feature a sculpture, Déposition at the Heart (2026), in brushed oak, laid flat, paired with a tar-and-charcoal painting (2023) presenting two wooden statues against a backdrop of trees.
Based in Val de Vesle (Marne), Christian Lapie (born 1955) first devoted himself to painting before creating the bas-reliefs In Case of War (1992, Frac Champagne-Ardenne) or War Game — cement, rebar, paint — censored in 1995. A decisive stay in the Amazon rainforest led him to make wood his material of choice. He carves raw, charred sculptures from imposing trunks that are presences rather than mere representations.
Christian Lapie is represented by Galerie RX&SLAG Paris-New York.
