American independent filmmaking is regularly celebrated during two festivals: the Sundance Film Festival and the South By Southwest (SXSW) Film. But Richard Peña, professor of professional practice at Columbia University, is willing to focus on independent movies at the edges of these celebrations to better avoid the clichés of the classic alternative American filmmaking and find the essence of the genuine fringe and independent filmmaking.
No blockbuster, no famous actors but authentic life moments and harsh political points of view, here is what to expect from American Fringe.
In presence of many American filmmakers, current independent filmmaking issues will be talked over for three years. By focusing on recent movies, the festival – held at the Cinémathèque – aims at seeing the real life in today’s world. Seven movies and seven short-movies (thriller, documentaries, comedies…) that we may have not discovered without Richard Peña’s patience and determination who looked for the extreme edges of the most brilliant talents.
