Directed and written by Rian Johnson, this second film in the trilogy that began with Knives Out reunites Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, and Janelle Monáe. Released in France directly on Netflix on December 23, 2022, the feature film presents a new investigation by detective Benoit Blanc, this time set in Greece among a circle of influential personalities.
Benoit Blanc is invited to a private island owned by a tech entrepreneur. The host gathers his entourage for a game of investigation that quickly turns into reality. Each of the guests has a secret that could compromise the balance of the stay.
The investigation plunges Blanc into a web of complex relationships, where rivalries, ambitions, and shifting alliances blur the lines. Revelations follow one after another, confronting the detective with a plot that goes beyond the scope of the planned entertainment.
Rian Johnson reprises the modernized whodunit structure he initiated in 2019. Filming took place partly in Greece and partly in studios. The cast includes Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Leslie Odom Jr., Kathryn Hahn, and Hugh Grant. The film is part of a trilogy commissioned by Netflix, the third installment of which, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knife-Wielding Story, is expected to be released on the platform in 2025. Daniel Craig reprises the role of detective Benoit Blanc, created with his own unique voice and gestures.
The tone combines crime comedy, social satire, and puzzle games. The atmosphere alternates between apparent lightheartedness and tensions linked to the characters' ambitions. The film is aimed at fans of interactive crime novels, ensemble casts, and investigations punctuated by successive twists and turns.
