Following in the footsteps of Forest Whitaker, Agnès Varda, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Jodie Foster and Michael Douglas in previous years, the Cannes Film Festival 2024 will crown a new 7th art personality with an honorary Palme d'Or. For this 77th edition of the festival, the choice fell on the American director, screenwriter and producer George Lucas, in recognition of his career and commitment to cinema.
"The Cannes Film Festival has always held a special place in my heart. I was surprised and delighted when my first film, THX-1138, was selected to be screened on the Croisette in 1971. Since then, I've returned to the festival many times as writer, director and producer. I'm truly honored by this special recognition, which means a great deal to me," declared the main actor on the announcement of his nomination.
The Cannes Film Festival says it's "delighted to salute one of the greatest personalities of contemporary cinema, a man with an extraordinary career who combines grand spectacle with innovation, mythology with modernity and cinephilia with technology". And fans of Star Wars and the Indiana Jones saga - directed by his friend Steven Spielberg, but written and created by himself - won't disagree!
The Cannes 2024 Festival will pay tribute to him at the 77th festival's closing ceremony on May 25. The ceremony will be broadcast live on France 2.
