La Semaine de la Critique 2024, the Cannes Film Festival's parallel selection of first and second features, has unveiled its selection for competition from May 15 to 23. Among these is Baby, a Brazilian film directed by Marcelo Caetano.
On his release from a juvenile detention center, Wellington finds himself alone and adrift on the streets of São Paulo, with no news of his parents and no resources to start a new life. During a visit to a porn cinema, he meets Ronaldo, a mature man who teaches him new ways to survive. Little by little, their relationship develops into a conflicting passion, oscillating between exploitation and protection, jealousy and complicity.
Marcelo Caetano hails from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. After studying anthropology, supplemented by audiovisual and literature studies at the University of São Paulo, the Brazilian director made his first feature film, Corpo Elétrico , in 2017. Baby will therefore not be able to compete for the Caméra d'Or 2024, as this award is intended for a first film.
