Colson Whitehead, author of the bestseller Underground Railroad, made his mark with Nickel Boys, a novel inspired by true events denouncing the abuse suffered by young African-Americans in a Florida reform school in the 1960s. Its film adaptation, by director RaMell Ross(Hale County This Morning, This Evening), promises a poignant and visually striking tale.
The film follows Elwood Curtis (played by Ethan Herisse), a bright teenager who dreams of a better future, inspired by Martin Luther King. But a miscarriage of justice lands him in the hell of Nickel Academy, a school rife with violence, racism and abuse of power. There, he meets Turner(Brandon Wilson), another young inmate who, unlike him, no longer believes in justice. Their friendship and differences in outlook will shape their survival in this unforgiving place.
Nickel Boys will be broadcast on Prime Video from February 27, 2025.
Synopsis: Elwood Curtis is a black boy in 1960s Tallahassee. He is unjustly convicted. He is sent to a juvenile reform school called Nickel Academy...
With its powerful story and strong themes, Nickel Boys will appeal to fans of committed cinema, like Les Figures de l'Ombre, Détroit and 12 Years a Slave.
Through Elwood's story, the film sheds light on the little-known history of segregationist reformatories, where thousands of African-American children were mistreated under the pretext of rehabilitation. A story that still resonates today with issues of racial justice and civil rights.
The direction of RaMell Ross, known for his documentary approach and powerful visual work, could bring a realistic and poignant dimension to this adaptation. His style could recall films like Moonlight or Fruitvale Station, where immersive staging serves to capture the emotional intensity of the story.
The cast is led by Ethan Herisse, revealed in Dans leur regard, and Brandon Wilson, while Hamish Linklater plays one of the heads of Nickel Academy, a character symbolizing the oppressive and ruthless institution.
With Nickel Boys, RaMell Ross adapts a poignant novel aboutracial injustice and institutional abuse in segregated America. Thanks to its immersive staging and powerful subject matter, this film has the potential to make a lasting impression, establishing itself as a powerful and necessary work.
