An Indian Youth – Homebound is the latest film by Neeraj Ghaywan, unveiled at Cannes 2025 in the Un Certain Regard section. Starring Ishaan Khatter, it hits theaters on March 25, 2026. This is Ghaywan’s second film featured in the Un Certain Regard lineup at Cannes 2025.

Homebound - An Indian Youth is an Indian drama written and directed by Neeraj Ghaywan. Selected for the Un Certain Regard sidebar at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, the film marks Ghaywan’s return to the screen after ten years, following his acclaimed 2015 feature Masaan, which won the FIPRESCI Prize in this section. Led by Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor, the film is set to hit French theaters on March 25, 2026.

In a small village in northern India, two childhood friends share the same dream: to pass the national police exam. For them, that uniform symbolizes more than just job security; it’s a symbol of social acceptance and dignity they’ve long been denied. Amid rigorous training and family pressures, their everyday lives are driven by hope — hope for a brighter future and a chance to rise above their circumstances.

As the deadline draws near, obstacles multiply and disillusionment sets in. Economic pressures, structural inequalities, and moral compromises gradually strain their relationship. The film focuses on the intimate tension that develops between personal ambition and emotional loyalty, testing a bond that has been growing since childhood.

The official trailer will be added as soon as it's released by the distributor.

An Indian Youth - Homebound

Nominated in the Un Certain Regard section, Une jeunesse indienne - Homebound continues the work of Neeraj Ghaywan, who explores social divides and personal stories caught within rigid systems. During the press conference unveiling the official selection, organized by Thierry Frémaux and Iris Knobloch, the film was highlighted as one of the standout returns at this 78th Cannes Film Festival.

Following Masaan, which already delved into themes of social class, mourning, and modern Indian youth, the director maintains a realistic and human-centered approach. The filmmaking focuses on everyday life, rural settings, and an extended timeline to capture the hopes, disappointments, and thwarted dreams of a generation facing an uncertain future.

With its understated tone and narration focused on male friendship, the film appeals to viewers who appreciate international auteur cinema and authentic social stories. It offers a nuanced portrait of contemporary India, far from clichés, highlighting the challenges of securing institutional recognition amidst fierce competition.
