The 77th Emmy Awards ceremony honors the best in American television. Find out how the awards work, their history, and the full list of programs nominated for the 2025 Emmy Awards.

How the Emmy Awards work

The Emmy Awards (or Emmys) are an annual celebration of excellence in television programming in the United States. Often considered the television equivalent of the film Oscars, they are one of the most prestigious honors in American entertainment. The selection process takes place in two stages: first, members of theAcademy of Television Arts & Sciences nominate candidates, then a final vote determines the winners in each category. For the top categories (best series), all Academy members can vote, while the technical or specific awards (direction, screenplay, acting, etc.) are decided by the professionals in each branch concerned.

Each year, the Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony usually takes place in September, shortly before the launch of the fall television season. The evening is alternately broadcast by the major U.S. national networks (CBS, ABC, NBC or FOX) to maximize viewership. Due to the large number of awards (over 80 categories in all), the majority of the technical and artistic trophies are presented at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, one or two ceremonies preceding the main evening. The famous statuette presented to the winners depicts a winged woman holding an atom, symbolizing the union of art and television science. The name "Emmy" itself is derived from "Immy", a nickname given to early video camera hits, feminized to match the winged figure.

History of the award

The very first Emmy Awards took place on January 25, 1949 in Los Angeles. Originally, it was just a local ceremony to promote television programs from the Los Angeles area. Shirley Dinsdale, a ventriloquist who hosted a children's program, was the first winner in Emmy history, taking home the award for Most Outstanding Television Personality in 1949. During the 1950s, the Emmys expanded to become a national event honoring programs broadcast throughout the United States. The Hollywood-based Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) was joined in 1955 by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences ( NATAS ) in New York, to organize regional Emmys and, later, the Daytime Emmys dedicated to daytime programs.

In the following decades, other variations of the Emmys were created to reward specific genres: for example, the Daytime Emmy Awards (created in the 1970s) dedicated to daytime programs, the Sports Emmy Awards for sports programs, the News & Documentary Emmys for news and documentaries, and the International Emmys for international television productions. Nevertheless, the Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony remains the most prestigious and talked-about. Since 1974, to avoid confusion, the term Primetime has been attached to these main Emmys, following the creation of the Daytime Emmys. Over time, the Emmy Awards have followed the evolution of the audiovisual landscape, including cable channels since 1988 and then, from the 2010s onwards, streaming platforms among the leading competitors. Today, for television creators, actors and craftsmen, winning an Emmy remains the ultimate recognition in the small-screen industry.
