Alongside Michelle Phillips, Denny Doherty, and John Phillips, Cass Elliot was a key member of one of the defining groups of the 1960s. As you might have guessed, it’s The Mamas & The Papas, known for timeless hits like "California Dreamin’", "Monday Monday", "Dream a Little Dream", and "I Saw Her Again". Often regarded as the group's most charismatic figure, Cass Elliot, affectionately known as "Mama Cass", tragically passed away on July 29, 1974, from heart failure. She was only 32 years old.
Coming soon, a biopic will chronicle the meteoric rise of this artist known for her powerful voice. According to NME, the film will draw inspiration from the memoirs of Cass Elliot’s daughter, Owen Elliot-Kugell, slated for release in 2024. Scripted by Emma Forrest, the movie will focus specifically on Cass Elliot’s life rather than the story of The Mamas & The Papas, although it’s likely that her time with the band will be touched upon.
As of now, there’s no confirmed release date for this biopic to hit theaters. However, we can tell you that Jessica Gunning will portray Cass Elliot. Best known for her role in the hit mini-series Baby Reindeer (Mon Petit Renne),
she will step into the shoes of the legendary singer Mama Cass in this upcoming cinematic project.
Hailing from West Yorkshire, Jessica Gunning has appeared in feature films such as Matthew Warchus’ "Pride" and the recent "Summerland." She is also set to appear soon in the adaptation of "The Magic Faraway Tree." However, it was her role as Martha Scott in the British Netflix mini-series "My Little Rini" that truly skyrocketed her career. Jessica Gunning has also earned multiple accolades for her performance, including a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Series.
