The Festival de Cannes 2026, a major milestone in cinema, unveiled its official selection for the 79th edition, taking place on the Croisette from May 12 to 23. Among the films in competition, the feature La Bola Negra stands out as an outsider, directed by a duo of filmmakers somewhat less known than their peers in the lineup: Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo.
Being programmed at Cannes marks a major milestone in a film’s trajectory, especially for its international rollout, and the Spanish duo’s film will be presented in this prestigious frame, alongside other highly anticipated titles. Known as Los Javis after their shared first names, the duo are the creators of the series La Mesías, which will air on Arte at the end of 2024.
The talent of the two Spaniards has, moreover, been highlighted by a fellow countryman and mentor, Pedro Almodóvar, who happens to be their "concurrent" for the Palme d'Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival 2026. Life’s twists of fate, sometimes!
Synopsis : Spain, 1932, 1937, 2017. Three men. Three eras. One invisible thread of desire, pain and legacy. La Bola Negra spans time to reveal what binds them.
