The Cannes Film Festival 2026, a true showcase of world cinema, has unveiled the films selected for its 79th edition, taking place on the Croisette from May 12 to 23. The feature Moulin by László Nemes joins this prestigious lineup. In the official competition, it is vying for the Palme d'Or 2026.
Having cut his teeth in the Cinéfondation section of the Cannes Film Festival, the Hungarian director unveiled his debut feature Son of Saul, which carried off the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2015. This time, László Nemes turns his attention to one of the icons of the French Resistance, Jean Moulin, played by Gilles Lellouche. Opposing him, the German actor Lars Eidinger will portray Klaus Barbie.
"It is with immense pride that I bring to the screen the tragic, epic story of Jean Moulin, the great humanist of the French Resistance in World War II. In the face of an unspeakable evil, with extraordinary—and unforeseen—determination, Jean Moulin's story still resonates today. I am convinced that contemporary audiences, here and abroad, will be drawn to this man who embodies civilization in the face of barbarism," the filmmaker told Variety.
Synopsis : June 1943. Jean Moulin, the Resistance’s undisputed leader, is arrested while trying to reunite the forces of the Secret Army. Interrogated by Klaus Barbie, the Gestapo chief in Lyon, Moulin is drawn into a ruthless confrontation. His ultimate battle against manipulation and brutality has begun. The fate of Free France hangs in the balance.
