Day for Night: a North American independent film festival in Paris

Ten films and six screenings make up the first edition of Day for Night at the Saint-André des Arts, featuring North American discoveries and films by Alexandre Rockwell.

Day for night brings together several generations of independent filmmakers from the United States and Canada. For its first edition, the festival presents five feature films and five shorts, with a strong focus on works that have yet to be widely screened in France.

The program brings together Drinking and Driving, co-directed by Avalon Fast and Jillian Frank, Camp, by Avalon Fast, and Debut, or, Objects of the Field of Debris as Currently Catalogued, by Julian Castronovo. These three films are billed as French premieres. Their stories move from summer friendships to a troubled summer camp, then to an investigation into a missing filmmaker.

Another part of the lineup looks back at Alexandre Rockwell, with Hero and In the Soup. The former is being shown in France for the first time and will be introduced by Virgil Vernier; the latter returns in a 4K restoration.

The short films include Dwayne LeBlanc’s Heirloom trilogy, comprising Now, Hear Me Good, You Do Not Exist and Civic, as well as Nathan Silver’s Sounds From Home and Karina Lomelin Ripper’s There’s a Devil Inside of Me. The screenings thus pair short and feature-length films rather than dividing them into two separate strands.
