The Cannes Film Festival unveiled in 2024 a brand-new lineup, the Immersive Competition, which this year is taking place at the Carlton Hotel and features collective virtual reality installations, mixed-reality experiences, as well as video-mapping and holographic works.
Overall, nine projects from eight countries have been selected to "showcase the vanguard of this new art form, defying established conventions, embracing new technologies and celebrating both new artists and established figures." This new selection "illustrates the vitality of an art in full evolution that is reshaping how stories are conceived, shared and experienced" outlines the organization of the Cannes Film Festival 2026.
The Best Immersive Work Award will be handed out at a closing ceremony on May 22 by a jury whose lineup has not yet been announced. Last year, the prize was chaired by French director Luc Jacquet and comprised American artist Laurie Anderson, French writer Tania de Montaigne, British filmmaker Martha Fiennes, and Japanese video-game creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi.
Another major novelty: this year, the Immersive Competition will be backed by an unprecedented technical setup that will enable group screenings accommodating up to 200 participants.
