Marvel's Wolverine is finally here! Developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, the action title released as an exclusive on PS5 on September 15, 2026. Previewed during the State of Play on September 3, 2026 with a final trailer, the game now invites players to dive into the heart of the clashes, the characters, and the universe of a Logan darker and more visceral than ever.
The project was born at Insomniac Games during the development of Marvel’s Spider-Man. As explained by Ryan Schneider, Franchise Director, Strategy & Studio Relations at Insomniac Games, it is "an independent game", developed by Brian Horton and Cameron Christian, both of whom previously worked on Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. And to add: "In the wake of our Spider-Man games, our goal here isn’t just to live up to what makes the character so popular, but also to look for chances to make it original and to reflect the spirit of Insomniac".
To offer a distinct adventure from Spider-Man while preserving its narrative approach, the studio turned to Earth-1048. As Walt Williams, Narrative Director at Insomniac Games, confirms: "We worked very closely with Marvel to craft our own take on this character, which led us to develop an entire chronology of the mutant condition within our world," he explains. He adds: "If we had simply adapted an existing story, players would already know the answers. We wanted everyone to feel that sense of discovery as they delved into Wolverine's past mysteries."
The story follows Logan on an international journey marked by the search for kidnapped young mutants and by several encounters with well-known figures from the Marvel universe, including Mystique, Sabretooth, Jean Grey and Lady Deathstrike. Liam McIntyre lends his voice and likeness to Logan, while Krizia Bajos portrays Jean Grey.
A casting choice that primarily serves the hero’s development, as Walt Williams explains to us: "We wanted to pick characters who act as mirrors for Logan. Sabretooth is a dark mirror that furthers his brutality and his animal side, while Jean Grey is a light that helps him realize he can be someone better", he says. He continues: "Each character highlights an aspect of what Logan thinks he could become or fears becoming".
Our take on Marvel's Wolverine:
We got our hands on this one a few days before launch — an adventure poised to captivate both comic fans and lovers of darker storytelling. Why? Because the story sticks faithfully to the source material, and Logan's visceral brutality is delivered just as awaited.
As a reminder of the setup: we dive straight into Logan’s arc, from his arrival at Essex Institute to his emancipation (we’ll skip spoilers). The journey kicks off with a co-op mission alongside Mystique in a lab — a perfect primer for testing the game’s varied mechanics before the plot really takes off.
On the graphics side, the game hits its marks — clean, polished, and razor-sharp, true to Insomniac Games’ usual standards. It runs smoothly and stays kinetic in terms of frame rate... no slowdown or display glitches to speak of. A definite strong point.
As for gameplay, things get a tad tougher: the intent is clear and Wolverine's abilities are generally well utilized, but the mechanics feel fairly Kojak—limited and repetitive. In combat, you end up mashing buttons more than crafting real strategy. There is some tactical flavor in choosing your approach (stealth vs. direct clash) and in the variety of strikes (leap, charge, special hits), but it doesn’t feel deep enough to be fully convincing. A shame.
That said, the fights are brutal and incredibly satisfying... a true cathartic rush! Wolverine's healing mechanics are well thought out, even if they make the game a touch too forgiving, just like the glowing scent-trail that marks his heightened senses. Less distracting than feared, it pops in at just the right moments to guide Logan’s enhanced senses without becoming strictly mandatory.
Regarding the narrative, it’s very well written and loaded with references. We especially appreciate how Jean Grey develops and complements Wolverine — the duo clearly steals the show from the rest of the cast. Another plus: the story sidesteps the usual X‑Men formula and centers on Team X under Nathaniel Essex (not Professor Xavier). A wholly original plot, yet still respectful of the lore.
Now, our verdicts:
For the strategy-minded, this isn’t their playground!
The combat system grows repetitive over time — most action boils down to button-mashing — which could bore players seeking depth. We wouldn’t necessarily recommend it to tactical or demanding game fans (think Soulslike), but you’re free to test your controller’s resilience! Either way, multiple difficulty levels are available. Even if the default mode lacks a spark due to its healing mechanic, the tougher modes offer a solid challenge. No need to fret about adjusting the game’s difficulty.
Sensitivity beware!
Note also that the game is exceptionally violent and targeted at mature players (PEGI 18). Dismemberments and claw executions go wild with no filter. For younger gamers or those squeamish about blood, the experience could be a lot to swallow. For a Marvel title, we didn’t expect Insomniac to push brutality this far... Consider yourselves warned!
Brutal mode engaged!
As for infiltration: stealth isn’t always mandatory, though environments allow switching up tactics. Purists may feel the stealth elements are a bit superficial, often serving as a prelude to open conflict. The structure remains linear, but action flows without a dull moment. Once you’re in the rhythm, the edge-of-seat pace takes over and unease doesn’t set in. Pro tip: mix up your assaults to avoid fatigue and to fully leverage Logan’s range of abilities.
Watch out for the glow!
Finally, the game unloads a heavy dose of adrenaline, and then some. To avoid cramps after long sessions, it’s wise to pace yourself. The title also packs a lot of accessibility options (handy if you’re stuck on a tricky section) plus display modes designed to prioritize a smooth 60fps at the expense of some visual polish.
That’s everything you need to know before jumping in!
This launch trailer blends cinematics with gameplay to highlight the core stakes of the adventure. We see Logan squaring off against a slew of foes already teased in prior previews, while Jean Grey, Mystique, Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, the Sentinels, and Trask Industries all feature prominently in the footage. The piece underscoring the darker tone of the story and the brutal, close-quarters combat that defines this Marvel mutant adaptation.
A studio embracing narrative maturity: "We knew from the outset that the game would be rated for adults because of how Logan's powers and violence manifest themselves. But for us, it was mainly about conveying the psychological weight of that violence. He's a man who doesn't really enjoy what he does, and that inner struggle shows in his relationships with others", he told us, during a meeting.
A vulnerability that transcends the purely physical when faced with enemies armed with tech capable of neutralizing the X gene: "Although Wolverine can survive almost any physical injury as long as his power is active, his true vulnerability lies in the fear of attachment and in the wounds of the heart that no power can heal", says the Narrative Director.
The music for Marvel’s Wolverine has been entrusted to David Fleming, a composer best known for his work on numerous film, TV, and video game projects. Insomniac Games unveils an evolving soundtrack that can adapt to battles and the different phases of Logan’s journey. The full original score has been available since August 28, 2026, a few weeks before the game’s release.
As to whether this adventure is just the start of a long series of interconnected games and crossovers with other Marvel heroes (hello Spider-Man), there’s a fine line — and it hasn’t been crossed yet: "The game is a 100% standalone story. For now, we’re focusing on developing each of our franchises on their own. Down the line, it’s also Marvel’s nature to dream of crossovers between characters... Those are questions for the future!", says Walt Williams.
Now available, Marvel's Wolverine delves into the full richness of its universe, its characters and its gameplay. All that remains is to experience this new interpretation of Logan once you pick up the controller on PS5.
