New delay for Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, the narrative action game developed by Skydance New Media under the direction of Amy Hennig, associate creator of the Uncharted series. Originally slated for early 2027, the title reuniting Captain America and Black Panther in occupied Paris during World War II is now expected to arrive later in 2027, with no precise window announced. Shawn Kittelsen, head of Paramount Games Studio, says the team is taking the time to prioritize the game's quality: “It’s a real game. It’s real. It’s playable. I even have my SpongeBob controller here, but the game is installed on my hard drive right now. I can launch a build of the game and play it,” he explains.
And to continue: "We are continuing its development, but Amy and her team have lofty ambitions for quality. This is a relatively small team given the AAA level they’re aiming for". He concludes: "What you saw in the earlier sequences aligns with the game’s current look. We’re building it with only a fraction of the resources typically available to other AAA productions of the same kind, while pushing a new, more responsible and sustainable development model".
In an official statement, the studio said it aimed to "deliver unforgettable premium-quality games" and to ensure a quality that lives up to the Marvel universe. "Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is an ambitious project, and we are committed to making sure it meets the expectations of our team, players, and fans when it comes to quality," Skydance Media also noted in a post on X, at the time of the delay to 2026. The studio adds it thanks the community for their patience, promising new information "as development progresses".
Since its initial presentation, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra has been particularly quiet. The title was originally scheduled for release in late 2025, as revealed by Khary Payton, voice actor for Black Panther, before being pushed back for the first time to early 2026. The actor described the game as a cinematic experience: "We want people to play this game and for the whole family to watch it like a series, similar to Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead," he explained in an interview with TheDirect. He also specified that players would not be "sitting in a café in Paris," promising a dynamic adventure in the capital of the 1940s.
Set during World War II, the game will allow players to take on the roles of four characters: Captain America, Azzuri (T'Challa's grandfather and Black Panther at the time), Nanali, a member of the Dora Milaje, and Gabriel Jones, a soldier in the Howling Commandos. Together, they will face Hydra, the Nazi organization led by Red Skull. Inspired by the comic book Flags of Our Fathers, the title promises cinematic staging supported by the power ofUnreal Engine 5.
This latest delay adds to a string of setbacks that could reshape Skydance Media’s entire slate. With no new date announced yet, the studio could seize the opportunity to reveal a fresh glimpse at the project during the forthcoming Game Awards, for example.
In the meantime, fans will have to be patient to finally discover this ambitious Marvel project, which promises to be one of the most eagerly awaited narrative games of the moment.
