Alan Wake, the main character, is a renowned thriller writer who has fled New York for the fictional town of Bright Falls in search of inspiration. However, he soon realizes that dark forces haunt the place. The original game is known for its unique blend of action-adventure and survival horror, particularly during the night scenes. Players can choose to follow the light or plunge into the darkness, discovering the darkest corners of the setting. The sequel, Alan Wake 2, should see horror take center stage.

We also discovered a new playable protagonist, Saga Anderson, an FBI agent. Our review of Alan Wake 2 :

Playing time: 27h, main story completed

After a beautiful first episode released 13 years ago and another game in the same universe, Control, just as captivating and released in 2019, now the star writer of the video game has reappeared, after having disappeared in theBlack Den. But what is the value of this second instalment inAlan Wake 's adventures? Remedy has produced a true masterpiece, but above all a game that's impressive on many levels. Starting with the story...

It's very complete, very well written, and even plays with the gameplay of the two main characters, Alan Wake and Saga Anderson. It's deep, it's complex without being inaccessible, and it sticks perfectly to the codes of the horror thriller. A faultless work... It's also a pleasure to meet up with certain characters, such as Ahti, the cleaning man also featured in Control, like an anchor in this dark ocean.

Graphically speaking, the software is of rare beauty, albeit very dark, playing on the luminosity of the environments and the flashlight that the player carries throughout the adventure, the last bulwark against the darkness that will not hesitate to put obstacles in your way and drag you deeper into the void. The mix of live action and classic graphics also adds a surprising touch to the game, further blurring the line between fiction and reality.

Gameplay remains relatively straightforward: you aim your flashlight to weaken (while being careful with the batteries) and then shoot the possessed, all the while progressing through environments each more terrifying than the last (forest, retirement home and its medical wing, abandoned funfair, etc.). But that's without counting on the various jump scares to really scare the crap out of us (those who aren't big fans of this kind of process need rest assured, it goes down relatively well without startling you too much), jump scares which, let's be clear, are important to the story as they communicate the proximity or irritation of an antagonist, indicating that you're nearing the end of your mission before the said antagonist is annihilated.

We also appreciate the change of scenery in theBlack Den, each timeAlan Wake changes the plot of the story he's writing, making doors appear or unlocking accesses. It's well thought-out, and adds even more unreal to the unreal (in that respect, we're already well served...). All in all, Alan Wake 2 is THE game to have in your video library, especially if you like the horror genre. And for those who aren't big fans of the genre, it's also a great way to get started. All you have to do is get it!

Alan Wake 2 has been created by Finnish studio Remedy, who reclaimed the rights to the saga after it became an Xbox exclusive. This new chapter promises breathtaking graphics thanks to Remedy's Northlight engine, and an intense gaming experience blending horror and survival. So get ready to plunge once again into the darkness of Bright Falls!
