In Paris, Pirate Experience offers a 400-square-meter immersive adventure built around the world of pirates, blending interactive challenges, a treasure hunt and digital technologies. A novel outing for groups or families looking to dive into Blackbeard’s lair. We tried it—here’s what we thought!

A experience worth discovering for deckhands of all ages... In Paris, Pirate Expérience invites families and groups of friends to embark on an immersive pirate-themed adventure just steps from the Grand Rex, in the 10th arrondissement. Set over 400 square meters, this action game suitable for ages 7 and up welcomes teams of 2 to 6 players for a session of about one hour, in a décor designed to plunge kids and grown-ups alike into a world of buccaneers, treasure and challenges.

The concept centers on a series of trials nestled in the heart of Blackbeard’s lair. Here, the experience puts movement, teamwork and interaction front and center, far from the classic escape room mold built around locks and riddles. As the six challenges unfold, players must coordinate their efforts to save time and walk away with as bountiful a loot as possible.

Pirate Experience in detail...

The journey unfolds across several themed rooms, each with a different mechanic. In the hold, players must react quickly and work together on a ship that pitches, thanks to a device built from numerous sensors. In the assault, we shift to a battleship where you need to aim true to push back the enemies. The captain’s cabin leans more on observation, with a scavenger hunt to identify the ship that holds the treasure’s coordinates.

The cave, for its part, introduces an augmented reality phase set in a collapsing scene where agility is imperative. Then comes the treasure door, which asks crew members to strike in rhythm on drums to advance together, before the treasure room, the final stage where you need to grab as many gold coins as possible before the lair shuts.

Our take on Pirate Experience:

An Action Game adventure we got a first-hand look at during its opening week... On arrival, you’re greeted by the crew who invites you to stash your belongings in lockers, then to pick a name for your crew to register your score. The team lead hands you an RFID bracelet to unlock each challenge, then kicks off the journey at the helm of Blackbeard’s ship. The rest is for you to discover by booking your session.

Our recommendations:

First, note that the common areas are accessible to people with reduced mobility, but the experience itself isn’t, due to the tight spaces. Still, you can drop by for a drink... that’s at least the idea the organizers want to convey, by offering a bar beside the experience. The spaces are decorated in-theme, with a lot of wood, pirate banners, and period lamps. As for the signposting, it’s a bit tucked away too... No obvious signage telling you you’re in the right place (at least during our test), though that might change later. When you reach the small square, look closely for the glass storefronts—they’ll help you spot the experience if you glance inside the nearby buildings.

As for the experience itself, the instructions are clearly laid out on the screens. You’ll grasp the rules immediately, and the challenges are fairly accessible, even for younger players. After all, this is designed for families eager to board Blackbeard’s ship. Don’t worry, adults aren’t left out—the experience also suits birthdays (for adults or kids), EVG (stag parties), EVGF, and even team-building or corporate seminars, with a dedicated space to match.

The challenges themselves are quite approachable and refreshingly innovative for the genre (apart from the opening one to acclimate fans of Action Games). Nearly all the traps are new for this type of experience in the region. We especially enjoyed the reinvented Floor is Lava and the surprisingly fun tam-tam game.

The final room, for its part, lets you steal Blackbeard’s treasure in a Fort Boyard–style setup, in full operation. It unfolds in two spaces: first, a chamber with a cage full of gold coins you must recover, and then another with a cauldron where you deposit those coins. Each completed challenge buys you more time in the treasure chamber, and 15 seconds before the timer runs out, a gate between the two rooms slides shut. If one team member gets stuck in the first room, you lose a portion of your loot.

It’s a remarkably complete experience in how it runs—quite a step up from other similar setups we’ve tested, such as Rush Action Game (everything happens in the same room), Fort Boyard Adventures (coins are digital), or the Team Break Fort Boyard escape game Fort Boyard at Team Break (similar to Rush Action Game). You collect the coins and constantly shuttle back and forth to fill the cauldron. Coin clamps, arms strapped to the torso—almost anything goes, as long as you follow the rules.

Also note that the brand is shaping an experience accessible in English, and a game bar (constantly evolving) is also available, for both the brand's customers and outsiders. All that's left is to dust off your bandana, your wooden leg, and your parrot, and set sail for Pirate Experience! Shall we reserve?
