You could almost forget you came to buy a baby gift. At the entrance to Atelier Choux Paris, at 82 rue de Grenelle in the 7th arrondissement, a hot-air-balloon-shaped door handle sets the tone. Once inside, the usual plush toys and baby-care accessories give way to a setting of a very different kind: gilded wood paneling, a ceiling painted with clouds, Versailles parquet flooring and an antique crystal chandelier.
After opening its first location on rue Hautefeuille, the French house, founded in 2016, conceived this Left Bank boutique as a tribute to the French decorative arts. The walls feature around thirty hand-carved panels gilded with gold leaf and decorated with the brand’s motifs. Brass furniture made by French artisans sits alongside two restored antique writing desks, used to display the objects. The space brings together references to the Renaissance, the Age of Enlightenment and the 19th century, with a particular passion for detail.
But Atelier Choux pays attention to more than just its decor. The brand made a name for itself with its Carrés, large organic cotton muslins featuring intricate illustrations, created by Swedish artist Mattias Adolfsson. His drawings bring together extraordinary architecture, animals, hot-air balloons and fantastical characters, with a wealth of little details to discover. The Carrés can be used as swaddles, lightweight blankets or accessories for outings with a baby.
The boutique also carries bib sets, newborn gift sets, bed linen, blankets, cushions, changing bags, party accessories and decorative items for children’s rooms. It even has a Carré Grenelle, a design specially associated with this boutique.
At Atelier Choux, the prices are as upscale as the decor. People come here for a gift for a little one, and may well spend as much time admiring the woodwork as the collections.
