Eiffel Tower key rings and fridge magnets not your thing? Paris is full of shops where you can find more original souvenirs, designer items and gifts that are a change from the usual tourist classics. Watch out for suitcases that are too small!

Guide in progress

The Eiffel Tower keychain hasn’t hurt anyone. But after spotting the fifteenth one in a souvenir shop, sometimes you just want a change! The good news: if you want to bring home an original souvenir from Paris, the capital is full of ideas far more personal than the usual magnets, snow globes and glow-in-the-dark Eiffel Towers.

You might prefer an illustrated poster, a decorative object, a lovely piece of stationery, an accessory designed by a creator, or a little find that brings to mind a neighborhood in the capital. Some creations play on Parisian clichés, while others draw inspiration from the architecture, streets, landmarks, or habits of local residents. And sometimes, a souvenir doesn’t even need to have “Paris” emblazoned across it to remind us of our stay.

Concept stores, designer boutiques, and unusual gift shops are particularly appealing if you want to venture beyond the usual tourist shops. You’ll find things you’ll genuinely enjoy using, displaying, or giving as gifts, with a wide variety of styles from one shop to the next. From a fun little token to a more intricately crafted piece, there’s plenty to fill your suitcase without turning it into a museum of Parisian clichés.

Fans of souvenirs made in France or Paris may also be interested in where the products come from and the makers’ expertise. A useful distinction, since an item inspired by the capital is not necessarily made there.

The hardest part is still choosing! A souvenir for loved ones, a gift for someone who loves Paris, a little treat for yourself... There’s no shortage of occasions. And if you can bring back something a little more personal than yet another metal miniature, you might as well treat yourself.
