Messy Nessy’s Cabinet Paris: The quirky Latin Quarter shop for unusual souvenirs

A blue storefront, antiques, unusual books and objects steeped in stories: Messy Nessy's Cabinet celebrates a curious, unexpected side of Paris. This shop in the 5th arrondissement is nothing like the usual souvenir stores.

Forget Eiffel Tower key rings and “I Love Paris” mugs. On a quiet street in the Latin Quarter, Messy Nessy's Cabinet has a very different idea of a Paris souvenir. Behind its blue storefront at 19 rue de Bièvre in the 5th arrondissement, the shop brings together vintage objects, curiosities and books that often have a story as interesting as their appearance. A discreet spot just a few minutes from Notre-Dame, it seems made for those who prefer the road less traveled.

The project was started by Vanessa Grall, creator of the English-language blog Messy Nessy Chic, dedicated to little-known anecdotes, hidden spots and historical finds. Her editorial world eventually took shape as a real shop, somewhere between an independent bookshop, a vintage store and a cabinet of curiosities. A natural extension for someone who spends her time unearthing forgotten stories.

The shelves are lined with illustrated books, travel guides, antique maps, engravings, antiques, small collectibles and graphic souvenirs. The selection also features creations by Parisian artists and craftspeople. Among the must-haves are the Don't Be a Tourist guides, which invite readers to explore Paris, as well as London and New York, beyond the usual tourist trails. These English-language books are especially appealing to international visitors keen to venture off the beaten path.

The pleasure lies above all in taking the time to look, browse and take an interest in objects that are sometimes difficult to categorize. And the shop isn’t just active during opening hours: it also hosts literary gatherings, craft evenings, readings and other events, some of which are reserved for members of its circle.

Messy Nessy's Cabinet is not quite a bookstore, nor quite a souvenir shop, and certainly not an ordinary flea market. It’s a little treasure trove of Parisian curiosities where the objects often make you want to ask questions. One tip: don’t plan a visit on too tight a schedule, because the shelves are worth lingering over.
