A few months ago, Les Toits Parisiens, a store specializing in Parisian roofs, opened in the heart of the Marais, in the Saint-Paul district. Here, you'll learn all about ridge ornaments, antique slates, dormers, bull's-eyes and other weathervanes, but also about the unusual trade of roofer-zingueur, a little-known yet essential profession in the capital.
The trade of zinc roofing has existed since the 18th century, and it's thanks to this profession that more than 35,000 Haussmann buildings are covered in zinc, giving the roofs of Paris the gray streaks so characteristic of this material. There's alsoslate, which zinc roofers also work with. In our boutique, you can discover, touch and even sculpt the materials we use to cover and protect our roofs.
What's more, in partnership with Wecandoo, the store is now offering workshops to create an object from the ancient slate that once covered the rooftops of Paris. Sessions are by reservation only, and are open to adults and young people aged 12 and over. Cost €60 per person for an hour-and-a-half workshop, so you can sculpt an authentic piece of Paris to take home with you!
