While the vineyards of Montmartre are well known, there are others that are far more unusual. Recently, vines have been planted on the roof of a historic building in the Marais district, and you can visit them!

Nowadays, the Paris region is not considered a land of vineyards, unlike the Bordeaux region, for example. Yet you're bound to be familiar with the historic vineyards of Montmartre and its annual festivals! There was a time, around the 4th century, when wine was one of Île-de-France's main products, destined for the king's table and for export outside the country. Today, vines can still be found on the Butte Bergeyre or in Bercy, but a new and unusual vineyard has just been established in the capital.

Following in the footsteps of honey and saffron on the rooftops of Paris, wine has now taken its place too! In the heart of the Marais district, the first rooftop vineyard can be visited, offering an exceptional view of the historicHôtel de Ville building. On the rooftop terrace, accompanied by your guide Virginie, you'll learn more about the vine's development cycle, the winemaker's work, and the creation of this particular layout, between the roof, the soils and the reason for the choice of grape varieties.

Offered by UrbAgri, which develops urban viticulture, this vineyard will reveal all its secrets for almost an hour. Since 2015, the organization has been working on the development of a green roof, with vegetable garden and vines, for local fruit and vegetables. You'll find nearly 100 traditional, hardy vines, perfect for withstanding the Parisian climate! A great way to help combat heat islands, add biodiversity and add value to inaccessible surfaces.
