Each month of September, a rather unusual parade takes over the streets of the capital. With its chars dedicated to electronic music, the Techno Parade delights fans of House, Drum & Bass, Jungle, Acid Techno, and Hardcore. After two blank years, 2026 marks the grand return of this event that, year after year, has grown into a major cultural and musical gathering. While many come to let loose to the feverish tracks mixed by some big names on the electro scene, few actually know the origins and history of the Techno Parade. Here’s the story.
It all begins in 1997, when Jack Lang, former Minister of Culture, attends the Love Parade in Berlin, Germany. Launched in July 1989, this event’s primary aim was to protest against the Berlin Wall that divided the city in two. After the wall fell in November 1989, the Love Parade continued, drawing more participants each year. This event gives Jack Lang ideas. The man who already helped launched the Fête de la Musique wants to draw inspiration from the Love Parade to create an event aimed at promoting electronic culture and thus debunking the many prejudices surrounding electro music.
With Henri Maurel, founder of Radio FG and co-founder of Technopol, among those surrounding him, Jack Lang thus launches the first Techno Parade on September 19, 1998. The success is immediate, as 200,000 people participate in this inaugural edition. This edition also led to the drafting of an interministerial circular recognizing the cultural aspect of techno.
Since then, the electro event has been staged every September in Paris, except in 2001 when the Techno Parade was cancelled after the September 11 attacks in the United States. The health crisis also led to cancellations in 2020 and 2021. In 2024 and 2025, the parade did not take place either, even though 2023 marked the 25th anniversary of this festive, electro-focused gathering, which has already seen on its floats artists as prestigious as Martin Solveig, Bob Sinclar, David Guetta, Manu Le Malin, Laurent Garnier, or Carl Cox.
