On May 16, all eyes will be on Vienna, the host city of the 70th edition of the Eurovision. This spring, Austria once again hosts the famed song contest following last year’s triumph by JJ, with the track Wasted Love.
This country, famed for its landscapes, architecture, and Schnitzels, is also a formidable contender at the Eurovision. It has three wins to date. But Austria is still well behind Sweden, long regarded as the nation with the most victories in the contest (7 in total across 64 participations since 1958). With just a few weeks to the 70th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, we invite you to revisit Austria’s three triumphs!
Austria's first Eurovision crown dates back to 1966. That year the country was represented by Udo Jürgens. He performed the song "Merci, Chérie" for the occasion. A tune that thus allowed the artist to clinch the top spot at the contest in 1966, beating 17 other contestants.
Note that Udo Jürgens had already represented his country twice before. In 1964 the singer placed 6th with the song "Warum nur, warum?". In 1965 he performed "Sag ihr, ich lass sie grüßen" and finished 4th. He would have to wait until 1966 to reach the top of the podium.
Austria's second Eurovision win is arguably the best known. In 2014, the country was represented by Conchita Wurst. Behind this persona lies singer and drag queen Thomas Neuwirth (or Tom Neuwirth). With her song Rise Like a Phœnix, Conchita Wurst took the Eurovision Song Contest final on May 10, 2014 with 290 points, ahead of The Common Linnets, representing the Netherlands, and Sanna Nielsen for Sweden.

Austria will have to wait until 2025 to win the Eurovision Song Contest for a third time, thanks to Johannes Pietsch, better known as JJ. In total, his song "Wasted Love" topped the juries' votes with 258 points. With 178 points from the televote, the Austrian artist finished with 436 points and thus clinched victory, ahead of Israel (357 points) and Estonia (356 points).
So, will Austria manage to win the contest again and add another victory to its tally? The answer will arrive this spring, on the occasion of the 70th edition of the Eurovision.
