One of the department's most anticipated cultural events return: the festival day // night returns to Essonne for a 15th edition, with 18 free, open-air performances spread across 14 communes in the department (91). From May 22 to 25, then May 29 to 31, 2026, street theatre, contemporary dance and circus arts take over the squares, parks and car parks of Essonne for two weekends that are both poetic and festive.
It is La Lisière, a creative space based in the southern part of the department (91) and dedicated to street arts and the public realm, that has been hosting the event since 2017. Its deputy director, Élodie Vilatte, succinctly captures the festival’s spirit: “The idea is to showcase the diversity of poetic and artistic languages while elevating the quality of public programs, so that the festival becomes a journey from town to village where people listen and watch artists tell us how they experience the world.”
The poster for this 15th edition features a heart built from iconic colorful construction bricks bearing the names of the communes, underscoring the festival’s strong ties with the agglomeration Cœur d'Essonne, which will host most of the performances. The festival also benefits from the backing of the Essonne departmental council, the Île-de-France region, and DRAC Île-de-France.
The kickoff is set for Cheptainville on Friday, May 22, with an opening at 6 p.m. followed by two performances blending street theatre and contemporary dance. The following day, May 23 and 24 in Bruyères-le-Châtel, in the park of the Château de La Lisière, you can see Tombouctou, un père et son fils, presented by the company d'Un Ours (Olivier Debelhoir), in partnership with the Scène nationale de l'Essonne Agora-Desnos. It is the only show staged twice, and free reservations are mandatory to attend.
For the festival’s second weekend, it steps beyond its usual perimeter, including a stop in Authon-la-Plaine in partnership with the communauté d'agglomération de l'Étampois Sud-Essonne, before closing on May 31 in Bruyères-le-Châtel with the show N degrees of freedom by the Collectif In Itinere.

To enjoy the festival, driving isn’t essential. Most towns are reachable by the RER C: toward Brétigny for Fleury-Mérogis, Saint-Michel-sur-Orge and Villiers-sur-Orge; toward Dourdan for Arpajon, Bruyères-le-Châtel, La Norville and Saint-Germain-lès-Arpajon; toward Saint-Martin-d'Étampes for Authon-la-Plaine, Avrainville, Chamarande, Cheptainville, Lardy and Marolles-en-Hurepoix. Carpooling is also encouraged via Mobicoop. For people with disabilities, tailored reception arrangements are available on request at contact@lalisiere.art or at 07 83 53 58 75.
Our take: This festival has that rare charm shared by events that don’t try to dazzle you. It’s free to attend, you wander through villages you may not know, and you encounter companies that have toured the world. Ideal for families, friends, or solo goers curious about live performance who want to get off the beaten track this last weekend of May.
