Here, Belle becomes Mel, a quirky girl with a passion for manga, living alone with her father until he suddenly disappears without a trace. As she embarks on a quest to find him, she encounters a strange yet endearing creature living in a timeless, frozen castle. An unexpected meeting that slowly transforms their relationship, steering clear of typical fairy tale clichés.

Our review of Beauty and the Beast at Grand Point Virgule:

We saw this show on a rainy Sunday afternoon. It’s a production that kids and their families are sure to enjoy. Why? For children, it offers a chance to revisit a familiar tale, perhaps through the animated film from the entertainment giant with big ears. The characters—even altered—are exaggerated and cartoonish in their expressions and mannerisms, making them highly engaging for young children. These little audience members are even encouraged to participate in their own way, occasionally called upon by the actors to elicit a reaction, much like a Guignol puppet show.

For parents, it’s also an opportunity to enjoy a show packed with subtle references—famous songs, French politics... The audience often bursts into laughter. There’s a good mix for everyone. On stage, the performers handle each moment with great skill. It’s a solid, well-rooted adaptation of the classic story. Also note the musical numbers featuring original songs.

Our tips for attending now:

If you want to avoid getting caught up in the participatory aspect of the show (and potentially drawing attention from the actors on stage), skip the front rows. While seating is general, an usher will invite you to choose your spot—just tell them your preference. They’ll likely ask everyone in the venue, so no worries.

Don’t be afraid to participate a little: you’ll only be asked to repeat a character’s name (like Jason, if you want to know in advance), hum it, or tap your feet and clap along. That’s all there is to it.

Don’t expect a complete retelling of the classic story. The animated objects (like the fireplace, wardrobe, etc.) are inspired by Disney’s version. The original tale by Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve and later Madame Leprince de Beaumont doesn’t include animated items; instead, the castle is “magical” and “independent”—music plays by itself, enchanted dinners appear out of nowhere, and so on. But it’s important to note that this is an adaptation rooted in Madame Leprince de Beaumont’s version, as we’re told.

The show is performed in the Salle Apostrophe, named for its shape (an apostrophe), so seat choice matters if you want to avoid twisting your neck. The best spots tend to be on the right side of the room, but no matter where you sit, you’ll have a good view from all angles.

The production playfully bends the rules of traditional staging to better subvert them, weaving in nods to pop culture and contemporary references. Led by an alternating cast including Gabriel Givernaud, Cyrine Arrar, Adrien Tuffreau, Arthur Guionnet, Clément Barberteguy, Pascal Buil, Marie Rioux, and Yanis Azaiez, the show is aimed at the whole family. Its goal? To offer a lively, punchy, and up-to-date reimagining of a beloved children's theatre classic. Ready to reserve your seats?
