The Wild Earth: two performances of the Chinese opera masterpiece at Salle Pleyel

The September 5 and 6, 2026, the Pleyel Hall invites you to discover the contemporary Chinese lyrical repertoire, still little known in the West! La Terre Sauvage, a major opera created in 1987 in Beijing and inspired by Cao Yu's novel, lands in Europe for an exceptional tour. The story follows a family tragedy, weaving passion, vengeance, guilt and redemption, performed by the artists of the National Opera and Dance Theatre of China.

In Chinese with French surtitles, Jin Xiang's score blends Puccini’s lyricism with ancient Chinese percussion, where the audience meets Chou Hu, a man consumed by vengeance. After eight years in prison, he escapes and returns to his village to settle scores with the man who destroyed his family, only to discover that his enemy is already dead, and that Jinzi, the woman he has always loved, is now the wife of that man’s son, trapped in a loveless marriage.

An utterly tragic story, weaving love, a blood feud, and sacrifice, famed for its psychological depth and social perspective, written by the most important playwright in modern China.
