He is one of France's best-known artists: an outstanding sculptor, a precursor of modern sculpture, a controversial artist in his own time... Auguste Rodin is as inescapable as Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso or Alfons Mucha. That's why, just two years after his death, the artist's Parisian home was transformed into a museum dedicated to his work.
In the Rue de Varenne, in Paris's 7th arrondissement, you can visit Rodin's former home and studio. TheHôtel de Biron, surrounded by its garden, houses almost 6,800 sculptures, as well as some 8,000 drawings, 10,000 old photographs and 8,000 miscellaneous art objects. Rodin's greatest masterpieces can be admired in the house and garden, including the famous The Thinker, The Kiss, L'Âge d'Airain, La Porte de l'Enfer, the Cathedral, the Monument à Balzac...
These numerous works give us an overview of Rodin's career and life: we discover his passionate love for Camille Claudel, his relationships with the artists of his time, his Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur...
The Parisian museum preserves and exhibits these works, bringing this priceless artistic heritage to life. In addition to the permanent collections, temporary exhibitions are held on a regular basis. Weather permitting, don't miss a stroll through the gardens: there's a sculpture trail, as well as a number of temporary exhibitions, depending on the venue's schedule. The museum organizes events throughout the year, and takes part in major national cultural events such as Rendezvous in the Garden and Nuit des Musées.
Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 6:30 pm, closed on January 1, May 1 and December 25. Admission is 13 euros - the museum is free for young people under 26, and on the first Sunday of the month from October to March.
Audioguides are available for visitors. Children aged 6 and over can enjoy a game trail on a touch-sensitive tablet, enabling them to discover the sculptor's world. A free checkroom is also available to visitors.
To extend your stroll, the Rodin Museum invites you to take a gourmet break at the café-restaurant L'Augustine. A souvenir store rounds off your visit. To get to the museum, get off at the Varenne (line 13) or Invalides (line 13, line 8) metro stations, or take the RER C to the Invalides stop.
A must-see for all art lovers!
