In the heart of the woods of Bougival, in the Yvelines region (78), there's a house like no other... Ivan Tourguéniev's Datcha. A Swiss-Russian cottage where every wall whispers literature. Labelled a Maison des Illustres in 2023, this house-museum built in 1874 was the writer's refuge during his last nine years - and the discreet setting for a life shared with Pauline Viardot.
Open to the public from March to the end of October, the house comes alive on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month from 2pm to 6pm - the ideal time for an immersive, discovery-filled 45-minute tour. Outside these times, the house is open by appointment, especially for researchers and groups.
On the first floor, theformer dining room plunges you into the intimacy of Tourguéniev: his native Russia, his fight against slavery and the death penalty, his correspondence with Zola, Maupassant and Dumas. The grand salon, meanwhile, reveals his encounters with Pauline and Louis Viardot and their artist friends, alongside a listed fortepiano.
Upstairs, you can enter his study , where he wrote his masterpieces, surrounded by his original library. His identically restored bedroom opens onto a balcony with a breathtaking view of the Villa Viardot. It was here that Tourguéniev died on September 3, 1883.
Here, the walls whisper, the windows tell, and the furniture has a long memory. An address to discover in the Yvelines for lovers of literature and culture.
