From Titanic to Around the World in 80 Days, movie posters play an important role: they're one of the first things we see when discovering a film, an image that can decide whether or not we want to go to the cinema. A genuine advertising and promotional tool, the poster is a visual must-have in the cinema world, and must make an impression at first glance. No doubt you can think of a few that have left a lasting impression!
Thanks to a new exhibition from the Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé, dive into the origins of these posters and discover their secrets, from April 11 to September 27, 2025, with "Making an Impression".
Cinema posters first appeared in 1896, inviting people to discover the Lumière Cinematograph, but it was Pathé who used them from 1902 to promote its films, with a large format and an illustration. Through these posters, numerous artists and poster designers distinguished themselves through their remarkable work, whose style changed from decade to decade, reflecting the artistic currents of the time. The posters are conceived as paintings, and aim to draw the passer-by into the darkened rooms, with historical, fantastic and sometimes funny details, depending on the film.
Some 50 posters by artists such as Cândido de Faria and Misti, from the collections of the Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé Foundation and private collections, are on display. Also on display are photographs and film footage from the Albert Khan Museum, drawings from the Bibliothèque des littératures policières, promotional documents and extracts from the films.
Fast-paced, this exhibition from the Fondation Seydoux-Pathé will amuse the curious and should enthrall lovers of the 7th art. We discover a selection of old posters, quite different from the ones we know. We recognize some of the names ofactors who have crossed the centuries, adaptations of well-known novels...
A lovely artistic stroll in the 13th arrondissement!
