Empty or full glass? Does the sun always come out after the rain, or is the world doomed? Depending on one's outlook, the world can look pretty bleak. Others remain hopeful, confidently looking forward to better days. And in the midst of it all, we find contemporary artists, always attentive to the ills of society, to the currents running through minds and hearts.
The result of a collaboration between artist Bonnefrite, architecture firm Encore Heureux and the Anthropocene research section of Lyon's École Urbaine, this exhibition takes the form of 60 large, double-sided panels. In its courtyard, Centquatre Paris unveils 120 painted posters, which respond to each other on these panels, like two sides of the same coin. The exhibition Énergies Désespoirs - Un monde à réparer is thus twofold: on one side hope, on the other anguish, on one side the future, on the other the end that is already in sight...
Bonnefrite is a French painter and graphic designer who likes to explore, experiment and work with a wide variety of artists and creators. This open-mindedness is reflected in his work: the 120 posters in the exhibition are all different, conveying a variety of messages.
On the one hand, there are 60 black-and-white posters, 60 works that point the finger at everyone's fears, at society's shortcomings. On the other, 60 different posters, this time in color. 60 messages of hope, showing that humanity hasn't given up, that beauty, goodness and perseverance still exist.
These posters are accompanied by texts and scientific data from the Anthropocene research section, offering a brief assessment of our situation in the world.
Feeling like you've seen it all before? That's normal: Le Centquatre presented a first version of this exhibition four years ago. Since 2021, however, the world has changed and artists' outlooks have evolved: so it's in this new light that the exhibition returns. After a pandemic, natural disasters linked to climate change, wars and economic crises, what does the future hold for the planet, for humanity?
This exhibition presents itself as a checkpoint: backed up by scientific data on climate change, it aims to take stock of the situation. Explain what has happened, what actions have made a difference. And, perhaps, to restore hope and encourage people to take action.
