Did you know that, before becoming a place for strolling and leisure, Bercy was a major wine spot in the capital? In 1860, the Cour Saint-Emilion was home to"the largest wine and spirits market in the world", covering almost 45 hectares, and the winery was recognized as a public utility. From June 19 to September 21, 2025, Bercy Village will host an open-airphoto exhibition retracing this exceptional wine history!
Installed under the covered passageways, these 30 photographs from the archives of Agence Roger-Viollet are accessible to all, free of charge, and provide an opportunity to visit the district's past and observe a lost Parisian heritage, of which traces remain in Bercy Village: the barrel transport rails and the 46 wine cellars of the Cour Saint-Émilion.
These images plunge us into the intense activity of the neighborhood's former warehouses, where every day, tons of barrels arrived on the Seine, unloaded by hand and redistributed throughout the capital. While this was also a festive and popular place, with guinguettes livening up the banks of the Seine, the exhibition also reveals the hard work, tired faces and daily lives of the men and women who kept this heritage alive for so many years.
