Emerging in the mid-1980s in the United States, techno music rapidly gained popularity across Europe, becoming synonymous with major festivals and raves. These events have long been the subject of both fascination and controversy over the past four decades. In response, three photographers have come together to present an authentic look at these techno parties through a compelling photographic exhibition.
La Maison Doisneau is hosting an exhibition featuring Julie Hascoët, Cha Gonzalez, and Rebecca Topakian, titled Beyond the Wall of Sound - Techno Festivals, running from March 13 to May 31, 2026. This free exhibit showcases years of dedicated work exploring underground and alternative scenes.
The three artists immersed themselves in these cultures and communities to capture the true spirit of techno music. To challenge stereotypes, the photographers got closer to the partygoers at these dance events, aiming to immortalize the authentic experience lived by the revellers.
In these photos, displayed at the Maison Doisneau in Gentilly, we see crowds coming together as one, alongside figures who stand out and express themselves through dance. We observe communities creating festive spaces—building walls, setting up smoke machines and strobe lights. There are fields, industrial buildings, and celebrations bursting open wherever they can take hold.
Through their work, the three artists give us an immersive glimpse into the festivities, highlighting the collective spirit and the crowd brought together by music. Their photographs offer a fresh perspective on the techno scene, aiming to capture what partygoers truly experience and feel.
This free exhibition is a must-see this spring in Gentilly, just a short drive from Paris.
