Nestled at the edge of the Saint-Germain-en-Laye forest is a grand residence: the Château de Maisons-Laffitte. At the behest of magistrate Jean René de Longueil, it was designed by François Mansart at a strategically located site along the route connecting the Louvre to the royal residence of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. An entire wing was even reserved for the king's potential use, featuring a ballroom built for the young Louis XIV and a chamber with a ceiling composed of intersecting domes.
Opened in 1651, it bears witness to nearly three centuries of history and the work of exceptional artisans whose craftsmanship is still preserved today. Visitors can explore this rich heritage, especially during the European Heritage Crafts Days.
This major cultural event takes place every spring. It offers the public a unique opportunity to meet artisans and witness their craftsmanship spanning centuries. On April 12, 2026, a program designed to be accessible to all aims to celebrate around ten artisans, who will have the chance to share their passion with visitors, highlighting the richness of French heritage.
