Threatened by renovations at the Moulin Rouge, the apartments of Vian and Prévert ultimately saved from destruction

The apartments of Boris Vian and Jacques Prévert, threatened by upcoming renovations at the Moulin Rouge, will ultimately be spared. This represents a significant step in preserving Paris's cultural heritage.

After months of negotiations, the apartments associated with Jacques Prévert and Boris Vian will ultimately be . These spaces faced potential destruction due to renovation works at the Moulin Rouge. The Parisian landmark, which has owned the apartments of Prévert and Vian since 2009, had announced last September its decision not to renew the leases.

On Friday, December 19th, a meeting took place between Eugénie Bachelot Prévert, the granddaughter of Jacques Prévert, the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (DRAC), and the Moulin Rouge, as reported by our colleagues at France Info. Following discussions among the involved parties, the Moulin Rouge committed to preserving the apartments of Boris Vian and Jacques Prévert intact, integrating them into the renovation project for the Mistinguett theater hall.

"All parties will meet regularly to discuss how to incorporate the legacies of Prévert and Vian into the Mistinguett project, aiming to celebrate the rich history of the Moulin Rouge," the iconic venue told France Info. Additionally, the DRAC announced that Eugénie Bachelot Prévert has submitted an application seeking protection as a Historic Monument for her grandfather's apartment.

Following the Paris City Council's appeal urging the government to step in and save this "unique heritage", the Ministry of Culture has announced it will be "closely monitoring this case, currently engaging with the rights holders of Jacques Prévert, Boris Vian, and the owners of the Moulin Rouge, in search of a solution that allows for the development of the cabaret project while ensuring the preservation of the heritage linked to these two iconic writers."
