Le Bon Marché: the Left Bank’s pioneer

If we had to name a patriarch, it would be him. Based since 1852 at 24 rue de Sèvres, in a vast complex also bordered by rue du Bac, rue de Babylone and Velpeau, Le Bon Marché is commonly hailed as the first great Parisian department store. The Printemps Haussmann, now spanning from 2 rue du Havre, 64-70 boulevard Haussmann and 115-127 rue de Provence, opened in 1865 at the crossroads of the Boulevard Haussmann and Rue du Havre. Its founder, Jules Jaluzot, bet on a neighborhood in rapid growth, near Saint-Lazare station. Very quickly, Printemps became one of Paris’s flagship department stores, so much so that it embodies the famous "cathedral of commerce," a place where people come as much for the architecture, the window displays and the sales as for the shopping itself.

La Samaritaine: the icon at the foot of the Pont-Neuf

At the foot of the Pont-Neuf, between the Seine and the Rue de Rivoli, La Samaritaine holds a singular place. Its current address is 9 rue de la Monnaie, even though its history stretches far beyond that modest number. Founded in 1870 by Ernest Cognacq, it became one of Paris’s most famous department stores, renowned for its slogan "On trouve tout à La Samaritaine". Its uniqueness also lies in its architecture, blending Art Nouveau and Art Deco: the former favors curves and living-inspired ornament; the latter leans toward more geometric lines, structured elegance, and a taste for stylized decoration. Closed in 2005, La Samaritaine a rouvert en 2021, after a long renovation.

The vanished addresses that still haunt Paris’s memory

Paris cherishes its survivors, but it also keeps a soft spot for its vanished icons. Among them, the Grands Magasins du Louvre, established at 91 rue de Rivoli in a sprawling complex that stretched as far as the Place du Palais-Royal, were one of the giants of the 19th century and a blueprint for the modern department store. After their closure in 1974, the site became the Louvre des antiquaires. Another ghost, La Belle Jardinière, born in 1824 on the Île de la Cité before moving to the quai de la Mégisserie at the crossroads with rue du Pont-Neuf. Specializing in ready-to-wear, it was one of central Paris’s most emblematic retailers.
