This summer, the Palace of Versailles will offer an exceptional opening of the Royal Chapel from July 7 to September 27, 2026. A chance to admire its nave, its painted ceiling, its sacristies, its stone marquetry, and many other beauties!

The Château de Versailles enriches its summer itinerary with the public opening of the Royal Chapel for a self-guided visit, just like in the summer of last year. For the rest of the year, you can only catch a glimpse from a distance, behind a barrier, by taking the Grand Apartments circuit.

From July 7 to September 27, 2026, you will be able to step into the great nave, lift your eyes to the ceilings painted by Antoine Coypel, Jean Jouvenet and Charles de La Fosse, wander the sacristies for the first time and behold the stone marquetry, rare and precious.

This chapel, the final great undertaking of Louis XIV, stands as one of the finest examples of French sacred art, built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and Robert de Cotte between 1699 and 1710. The building comprises two floors: the main gallery above the entrance was reserved for the royal family, the side galleries for princes of the blood and other dignitaries, and the ground floor housed the rest of the court.

Little altered since the 18th century, the chapel and its annexes—including the grand sacristy, the lavabo room, the oratory of Madame de Pompadour, the choristers’ vesting room, and the musicians’ room—needed a restoration, just as the exterior décor was reworked between 2018 and 2021. You will thus be able to admire this small religious complex in its entirety, with woodwork known as “à la capucine” and Versailles-style parquet floors featuring friezes and inlaid panels.

After August 31, they will thereafter be accessible only by guided tours. Practical information and reservations can be found directly on the château's official website.
