Under the footbridge of Notre-Dame, there exists a Paris that is not always apparent at first glance. There, just beneath the steps of walkers and the curious, the Archaeological Crypt of the Île de la Cité unfolds more than two thousand years of urban history, like a buried stage that tells, stone by stone, how Lutetia became Paris. On the occasion of the European Archaeology Days, organized this year over the weekend of June 12–14, 2026, this secret hidden in the heart of the capital invites us to a special program!

That venue is especially suited to it: The Crypt houses the remains uncovered during excavations carried out between 1965 and 1970 beneath the Notre-Dame forecourt, and today offers an exceptional panorama of the evolution of Île de la Cité, Paris’s historic heart. Here you can trace the traces of a quay from Ancient Lutetia, the remains of a Gallo-Roman thermal complex, a stretch of early 4th‑century city walls, as well as medieval, classical elements and the more modern urban developments of the city.
With the help of a short questionnaire, discover the remnants of the ancient city of Lutetia and the techniques used to preserve traces of an ancient civilization.
