A handful of historical vestiges are opening to visitors in a small town in Seine-et-Marne, in Saint-Loup-de-Naud, this summer! From August 1 to September 10, 2026, the Tower of the Haute Maison, built in the 13th century as the former stronghold of the Saint-Loup priory, will become open every afternoon from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., offering a chance to admire a tangible fragment of medieval history and take a real step back in time!
Having weathered English assaults in 1432, the Wars of Religion in 1567, and then the Révolution française which saw its monastery disappear, this tower stands proudly, listed as a Historic Monument since 1990. Rectangular in plan, measuring about 9 by 10 meters, this small seigneurial residence, serving as both dwelling and defensive post, features walls nearly 1.5 meters thick on the ground floor. In the 17th century, the tower was transformed into a high house, with the addition of windows and a slate roof.
A place steeped in history, surrounded by Italianate gardens, it has witnessed centuries and the great names: first owned by the lords of Saint-Phalle, it was purchased at the turn of the century by Princess de Polignac (Winnaretta Singer), who gifted it to her lover, the renowned British writer Violet Trefusis. There she ran a literary salon from 1945 to 1966, hosting notably Marcel Proust, Virginia Woolf or Colette.
François Mitterrand, a longtime friend who greatly appreciated the site, had his ashes brought back here. While the period furniture and the exceptional collection of antique mirrors that were the pride of the house were dispersed after the writer's death, the old stones and the ruins of the priory preserve a romantic atmosphere (romantic in character). A fascinating visit, which is also possible during the Heritage Days.
Note, however, that access is difficult by any means other than car, even though the town sits just a short distance from Provins and Longueville, whose train station is 4 km away, if you have a bike or enjoy hiking. No reservation is required to visit.
