Les trésors religieux du Pays de Fontainebleau (Religious treasures of the Pays de Fontainebleau ) invites you on an original journey to the heart of the spiritual heritage of this emblematic region of Seine-et-Marne. These discovery tours reveal the often little-known wealth of a region that boasts more than forty remarkable religious buildings, witnesses to an extremely rich history. The Pays de Fontainebleau Tourist Office, in partnership with the Château de Fontainebleau, the École du Louvre and the DRAC Île-de-France, offers three original itineraries to follow in the footsteps of the pilgrims, hermits and builders who have shaped the spiritual identity of this unique region.
This first discovery trail takes us to the heart of the Fontainebleau forest, once a land of spiritual retreats and pilgrimages. An ideal itinerary for walkers and medieval history buffs, in an exceptional natural setting that has inspired many artists.
This second itinerary follows the river through picturesque villages where churches bear witness to an ancient prosperity linked to river trade and spirituality. It's a bucolic stroll through architectural heritage and the charm of the banks of the Seine.
In Bois-le-Roi, Chartrettes, Héricy, Samois-sur-Seine and Samoreau, we discover buildings constructed between the 11th and 16th centuries, rich in remarkable works of art. Marine ex-votos, colorful stained-glass windows, Baroque paintings, typical Briard bell towers and gilded altarpieces make up a veritable artistic treasure trove. These Seine-side churches reveal the history of prosperous communities that combined river trade with religious fervor.
The itinerary follows the footpaths and cycle paths along the Seine, allowing you to discover these little jewels of heritage in a soothing natural setting. Each village tells a different story, but all bear witness to the special relationship between water, commerce and spirituality that has shaped the identity of these communities.
The final route explores the vast agricultural plain of the Pays de Fontainebleau, home to modest but remarkable churches perfectly integrated into their rural surroundings. An authentic immersion in the rural and spiritual soul of the region, with stops full of character.
In Cély-en-Bière, Fleury-en-Bière, Saint-Germain-sur-École and Saint-Martin-en-Bière, these lowland churches reveal hidden, often unsuspected treasures. Ancient frescoes, polychrome wood carvings, finely crafted altarpieces and rare masonry techniques such as opus spicatum and cross vaults bear witness to the skills of craftsmen of yesteryear.
These Bière bell towers harmoniously punctuate the agricultural landscape, serving as visual landmarks in the rolling countryside. Their modest yet meticulous architecture reveals the deep attachment of rural communities to their spiritual heritage and their ability to create beauty with limited means.
These three discovery tours are complemented by a free tourist guidebook, "À la découverte du patrimoine religieux du Pays de Fontainebleau", the fruit of cultural mediation work with twelve students from the École du Louvre. The thirty-page guide lists over forty religious buildings in 26 communes, ranging from small, forgotten chapels to majestic churches.
