Attention, fans of the Cars franchise! Disneyland Paris announced in 2021, via an update to its park map, the arrival of an attraction inside the Walt Disney Studios (now Disney Adventure World). Families and fans of Lightning McQueen will thus get to experience Cars Road Trip, the reimagining of the attraction Studio Tram Tour and the resort’s second offering after Cars Quatre Roues Rallye located in the same park.
The opening, originally slated for summer 2020, was postponed to a later date due to park closures and the halt in work brought on by the coronavirus outbreak. But there’s good news nonetheless: on the occasion of the destination’s 29th anniversary, this Monday, April 12, 2021, Beth Clapperton, artistic director at Walt Disney Imagineering, announced that the attraction would open as soon as the park reopens after the Covid shutdown. The announcement mirrors what Tom Fitzgerald, one of the Imagineers behind the attraction, said in a video, confirming an official 2021 opening.
To whet fans’ appetite before they can see it with their own eyes, the Paris amusement park shared news at IAAPA 2020 on Monday, November 16, 2020, offering a glimpse of the ongoing construction for the upcoming attraction through two photos. What did the images show? That the project is progressing well at the Catastrophe Canyon stage, the attraction’s “water” section where the trucks-trains are violently jolted by a “tremblement de terre” in the middle of a canyon, before being splashed. With no real glimpse of the Dinoco truck, the photos instead feature the tank, repainted in the franchise colors.
And also, on November 23, 2020, new visuals revealed the progress of the new station that will welcome visitors before they embark on the road of Pixar-branded films. A brand-new station inspired by the Mid-Century Modern architectural style. According to the Disneyland Paris press site, visitors should enter through "a tourist stand featuring a number of road maps, postcards and other decorative objects".
An attraction trimmed by part of its original route, due to the construction of a pathway leading to the lake, as outlined in the park’s expansion plan announced in February 2018.
It invites children and their parents on an entertaining journey, similar to what Studio Tram Tour offers, with a behind-the-scenes look at the Pixar animation studio.
It's worth noting that even though the route is changing, visitors should still encounter a few nods to the original attraction, such as the canyon. By contrast, the section recreating London has already been razed to make way for the future Marvel zone, Avengers Campus. It’s also worth noting that the attraction’s entrance will, in the future, be located within Toy Story Playland.
