Located next to the Passerelle des Douanes, Square Frédérick Lemaître is on the Canal Saint-Martin. With its quays particularly popular with Parisians and tourists alike on sunny days, for aperitifs with friends, the Canal Saint-Martin then gives way to the Canal de l'Ourcq.
So if you're passing through the neighborhood, be sure to take a stroll through the Square Frédérick Lemaitre. What makes it special? Here, you can watch the daily ballet of the Canal Saint-Martin locks, which regulate the water level to allow boats to pass through on their way to (or from) the Place de la Bastille underpass.
Created in 1891, the square is named after a 19th-century Parisian comedian, who was also an important figure on the Boulevard du Crime (the nickname given to the boulevard du temple, where theaters used to stage events, according to the City of Paris).
The square is open every day, all year round, with opening times varying according to the season. An original walk along the Canal Saint-Martin!
