Fancy a good cup of coffee, just like in Athens? Head for Yorgaki, a brand-new Greek café in the 9th arrondissement, a stone's throw from Pigalle. Paris's very first"Kafeneion" on rue des Martyrs, offering a unique choice of drinks and Greek culinary specialities.
And at Yorgaki, there are no machines or coffee makers as you may be used to, but a Briki, a sort of small saucepan in which coffee, water and sugar are placed, all cooked by the heat of a pile of sand. This method is still used today by Bedouins in the desert, and has made its way through the history of the Mediterranean, notably among the Turks who occupied Greece until the country's independence in 1830. Greek beers such as Fix and Mythos are also available.
When it comes to culinary specialties, Mediterranean food lovers can enjoy Tzatziki, Melitzanosalata, Tarama, Choriatiki Greek salad (made with tomatoes, cucumber, red onions, black olives, feta cheese and spices), marinated anchovies and Kalamata olives. You can also indulge in a variety of desserts: locally-produced Loukoums, Kourabies, Portokalopita or the famous Caprice cookies, a kind of fine Russian chocolate cigarettes. In short, everything you need to treat yourself and travel under the Greek sun... Shall we go, friends?
