What is a mochi donut? As the name suggests, it's the marriage between a donut and a mochi, of course. Imagine the softness of a mochi on one side and the warm crunch of a doughnut on the other, and you're already melting. So, we see you coming with your big noodles, it's surely heavy and greasy this stuff! In fact, it's light and airy on the palate, making it easy to swallow.
Head for Ponpon Café, this new coffee shop in the first arrondissement, opened in January, a stone's throw from the Louvre. Now open 7 days a week, from 11am to 7pm, it's the perfect place to treat your sweet tooth.
For the record, the real name of the mochi donut is Son de ring, which in turn comes from Pão de queijo (a Brazilian recipe for cheese made from tapioca flour). They're inspired by Japanese Poi mochi, the first glutinous rice flour-based mochi doughnuts to be born in Hawaii in 1992!
On site, you'll discover a range of choices:
But note that the flavors change regularly. So you can follow Ponpon's Instagram stories to discover the flavors of the day every morning. Count 5€ for a pastry. Yes, it may sound expensive, but don't forget that a mochi costs around 3€ in the store. A mochi donut represents é or 3 in the end.
In addition to mochi donuts, the café also offers hot and cold drinks . Lychee raspberry, mango passion or yuzu lemonades for freshness, and café latte, matcha latte and even yuzu latte for hot versions, plus espresso of course.
