Restaurant Alfred, which opened just a stone's throw from Place Vendôme, follows in the tradition of Parisian brasseries, with its white-topped tables, black-suited waiters who fill glasses with water as they are emptied, and traditional dishes.
But there's no dust, and the address of Basile and Martin Beaupère, already at the helm of the Le Camondo restaurant on the edge of the Parc Monceau, features modern attributes designed by the Necchi Architecture studio. Inspiration comes from the Etoile de mer bistro adjoining Le Corbusier's cabin in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, as well as architect Adolf Loos' American Bar in Vienna.
Velvet banquettes, colorful wall panels, carpeting in the lounges and chairs from the 90s - the Art Deco décor is elegant, and the name of the place, in homage to Alfred de Musset, adds to its charm. To support them in this new adventure, the two Beaupère brothers have enlisted the help of Theodore, who worked at Monsieur Bleu, and Casimir Mahoudeau. In short, it's a brotherly affair.
On the plates of fine crockery, finely French recipes and quality products: a generous truffle stracciatella on toasted baguette, a demonic cherry tomato tatin, a half-cooked tuna and sweet potato purée that ticks all the boxes, a fillet of beef with pepper and whisky sauce; a pretense of simplicity - it's nothing of the sort.
Connoisseurs will recognize the white dunes from the boutique of the same name for dessert, generously covered with a red fruit coulis; the fine chocolate fondant is adorned with roasted hazelnuts and a scoop of Madagascar vanilla ice cream. Prices reflect the area - €35 starter/main course or main course/dessert, €45 starter/main course/dessert - but with the assurance of good food.
