What do Pablo Picasso and dance have in common? Much more than you might think! The Spanish painter took an interest in the performing arts throughout his career. In particular, he worked with Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, for which he designed sets and costumes. It was another way to bring his art to the stage and into contact with dancers and musicians.
This weekend offers a chance to rediscover this dialogue between the arts through movement. Families can explore the museum’s collections, observing the bodies depicted in the works, and then try out different ways of moving themselves.
You don’t need to know how to dance to join in! The museum invites visitors to discover several styles, each with its own distinctive world.
Flamenco, rooted in Andalusian culture, combines dance, singing and percussive rhythms. Voguing, which emerged in New York’s Black and Latino LGBTQ+ communities, is known for its striking poses, lines and movements inspired, among other things, by fashion. Popping, a technique associated with hip-hop dance, uses muscle contractions and sharp, jerky movements that sometimes resemble those of a robot.
Artists and choreographers will guide participants through these discoveries, with sessions suitable for children aged 3, 6 or 8 and up, depending on the discipline.
Families can also enjoy Coquilles, a performance by the Amala Dianor company that brings hip-hop and contemporary dance into dialogue. Suitable for children aged 1 and up, this production combines movement, music and imagination.
Children who prefer making things with their hands can take part in workshops to create colorful masks or try out some of the artistic techniques used by Picasso, such as drawing in a single line or creating front-and-profile portraits.
And to add a festive touch to the visit, the museum even invites participants to come in costume—there’s a surprise in store!
