The Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days ) are one of those not-to-be-missed events that punctuate the Parisian cultural calendar. Every year in September, this major event invites enthusiasts and the curious to take advantage of a surprising and enriching cultural program. Museums, monuments, castles, churches, gardens and even places usually closed to the public , such as ministries, all play their part in the Journées du Patrimoine. One after the other, we're offered tours - often free of charge - as well as original events for young and old alike.
Paris has a fabulous program for this exceptional weekend, but the rest of the region also has plenty to surprise you. If you're in the Hauts-de-Seine region or would like to explore the department of 92, why not visit the town of Sèvres? Accessible by public transport, this town has a charm all of its own, which you can discover during the 42nd edition of the Journées du Patrimoine. Built on the southern slopes of the Saint-Cloud estate, Maison des Jardies was originally a simple winegrower's dwelling. Its restful setting, ideally situated near Paris, attracted a number of 19th-century personalities who left their mark on the site.
Honoré de Balzac settled in Les Jardies in 1837. Documents, objects and works of art will help you understand why the writer settled here and what his plans were.
In 1878, it was Léon Gambetta's turn to live at the Maison des Jardies. He did not enjoy this haven of peace for long, however, as the politician was accidentally injured and died in his home on December 31, 1882. The tour will introduce you to his origins, his career and his outstanding commitment to the Republic.

Visit the Maison des Jardies on your own, with the help of tour aids. Stroll through the house and garden at your own pace, following in the footsteps of two major figures in 19th-century French history: writer Honoré de Balzac and politician Léon Gambetta.
The former settled in Les Jardies in 1837, notably to develop a real estate project, before the bailiffs caught up with him! The latter bought the property in 1878 to rest from an exhausting parliamentary life, but an accidental injury took his life four years later. Objects, works of art and documents punctuate the visit and retrace the destiny of these great men.

In 2025, the European Heritage Days are dedicated to the architecture that shapes our landscapes and our cultural memory. According to the Académie française, architecture is defined as "the art of constructing, arranging or decorating buildings". This year marks the centenary of the 1925 Paris International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. Come and discover, accompanied by a mediator, the Jardin des métiers d'Art et du Design, a cultural venue dedicated to contemporary creation, housed in an art deco building designed by the architect Roux-Spitz and classified as a Historic Monument in 1942.
