As the Ministry of Culture announces a nationwide, festive celebration marking the bicentennial of photography in France—honoring French creation and heritage—the Hôtel-Dieu art center hosts a group show that offers a contemporary take on how photographic techniques have evolved.
Just as Niepce did in 1826 with the world’s first photograph, and Henri Le Secq in 1851 documenting the parish church of Saint-Étienne de Brie-Comte-Robert, six photographers capture the action of light on sensitive surfaces over time—sometimes even without a camera!—using techniques such as platinum-palladium, gum bichromate, cibachrome, ambrotype, and more, yielding astonishing color effects or subtle black-and-white nuances.

In the remarkable setting of the Saint-Étienne Church, the history of cinema takes center stage with a screening of The Passion of Joan of Arc, live-scored on the organ by Éric Lebrun, a concert performer, the organist laureate of St Antoine des Quinze-Vingt (Paris 12), and a professor of organ at the Conservatoire of St Maur des Fossés.
The images from the silent-film masterpiece will mingle with the sounds of the Brie organ to offer a unique artistic and patrimonial experience.
