Heritage Days, jamboree, Ballonnière... That's a lot of strange words. Let's start at the beginning. The Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days) have been held in France for over 40 years: this major cultural event takes place every September. Over the course of a weekend, the curious are invited to (re)discover all the heritage that surrounds them, from parks and gardens to statues, museums, sports halls, theaters, cinemas, places of worship, ministries, libraries, stations and transport hubs...
A whole weekend of visits and activities to learn more about the history and curiosities of France and its communes. It's an opportunity to discover little-known and surprising nuggets , such as the Ballonnière museum and the 1947 jamboree.
This little museum, hidden away in the Yvelines, commemorates two key events in the history of the town of Moisson. In 1902, the Lebaudy brothers and engineer Julliot took their brand-new invention, a "lighter-than-air" machine, into the skies: the dirigible! Later, in 1947, Moisson hosted the Peace Jamboree, a gathering of 30,000 scouts from 50 different nations, to mark a new era of peace and brotherhood between peoples.
These two unusual moments are described in this museum, which is opening its doors to the public on the occasion of the Journées du Patrimoine. Here's the program for the weekend:
