After several years with your current mayor, it's time for a change! But first, the upcoming municipal elections must take place: French voters are invited to cast their ballots on March 15 and 22, 2026. All you need to do is choose the candidate you wish to support and drop their ballot into the ballot box. An act that isn't always easy for everyone.
Work commitments, travel, illness, conflicting schedules, or a polling station too far from home — there are plenty of reasons that can prevent a voter from making it to the polls. Thankfully, there's a solution: proxy voting.
This system is very simple: it allows you to choose a voter to vote on your behalf on polling day. Proxies can be requested at any time prior to voting day. However, "in the event of a late request, given the time it takes for your proxy to be forwarded to and processed by the town hall, it is possible that your proxy will not be able to vote in your place ", explains the Ministry of the Interior website. In other words, although there is no legal deadline, this official document must be completed sufficiently in advance for the administration to take it into account.
In practical terms, all you have to do is fill in the online form, then validate it "in person ata police station, gendarmerie post or consulate, within the next two months. On site, you'll need to present your "Maprocuration" registration reference and an identity document."
Alternatively, you can go directly to one of the above locations to fill in a paper form. Please note that to complete this document, you will need the national electoral number of the person to whom you are giving power of attorney (also known as the "proxy"). This number is shown on the electoral card.
The Ministry of the Interior also reminds you that you can cancel your proxy at any time (by filling in a form at a gendarmerie, police station, etc.). You can even choose to go and vote, even if you have given your proxy, provided that your proxy has not already voted on your behalf.
Note that there is no legal obligation for the proxy to respect your voting instructions. You should therefore choose a person you trust, who you are sure will come to vote in this election!
